ACHERON RIVER

Acheron river, according to mythology was the path through which the souls were lead to Hades.It springs from the mountains of the prefecture of Ioannina, and after 64 km is poured into the Ionian Sea Acheron gets through a narrow gorge between the mountains Paramythias and Souli, called the "Straits of Acheron. In several places the river formes ponds and small lakes. In areas aside the river can be found rare species of plants and animals. The significance of Acheron was great in ancient times, when on the north shore of Acherousian lake was founded Nekromantion, the most important place of communication with the dead and worship the gods of the Underworld.

NIKOPOLIS

The city was founded by Octavian in 31 BC, at the Battle of Actium, and evolved into a major communication spot connecting Greece with the Roman Empire. The decline of the city started out in the 3rd AD century and early 10th AD century was abandoned. In the archaeological region you can see the Odeon, the monument of Augustus, the Roman Theatre of 1st AD century and many notable Christian landmarks. The walls which are salvaged were rebuilt during the 5th century.

NECROMANTIO OF ACHERON
